Format means we are talking about the recent optical device formats.HD-DVD which are used to store High Definition Video of 1080p at a resolution of 1920x1200.HD DVD was designed principally by Toshiba. It is similar to DVD as they have reduced the wavelength of laser and it can store 3 and a quarter(15 GB instead of 4.7 GB)(30GB in dual layer). The other competitor is Blue Ray,it is similar to DVD as the wavelength of the blue laser is further reduced to 405nm and it can store about 25GB (50GB in dual layer)and it also supports High Definition Video.Theoretically, HD-DVD can store a maximum of 60GB while Blue ray can go upto 200GB.HD-DVD play 5.1 or 3.3 hours of HD Videos, depending on encoding method while a Blue Ray can play 8.5 or 5.6 hours. Both the formats supports the following audio soundtracks Uncompressed linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution, Dolby Digital, DTS.
Check the CNET Prizefight comparison of HD-DVD and Blue Ray :
The manufacture support HD-DVD are Microsoft, Intel, HP, NEC,Toshiba, LG, Thomson/RCA, Onkyo, Samsung while for Blue Ray it comes from Apple, Dell, BenQ, HP, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, TDK,Thomson/RCA.Yet Blue Ray gets more support then HD-DVD.The studio support for HD-DVD are Paramount, Studio Canal, Universal, Warner, the Weinstein Company, DreamWorks Animation while for a Blue ray it comes from Sony Pictures (including MGM/Columbia TriStar), Disney (including Touchstone, Miramax), Fox, Warner, Lions Gate.HD-DVD has a console compatibility with Microsoft's Xbox 360 only with an external accessory which you need to pay to get that one while Blue ray can played in Sony Playstation 3.Both the HD-DVD and Blue ray cost more or less the same price ranging US$20 to US$30.Both of the formats has a 300+ titles released so far.Region-coded discs and players are not possible in HD-DVD while it is possible in Blue Ray.
Yet the DVD's are still pretty great. They're cheap and plentiful, can play single universal standard and not HD video. And even though they're limited to a mere 480p native resolution, they're still the best-looking video source on HDTVs outside of actual HD sources and maybe some of the latest video games. From a picture-quality and convenience standpoint, the move from DVD to HD DVD/Blu-ray isn't as compelling as the jump from VHS to DVD was.The Blue Ray and HD-DVD writers are expensive, and even the HD-DVD and Blue Ray discs are expensive. So wait for some time until the hike for HD-DVD and Blue Ray comes down.
